All the business minds have inner desire to take their goods at international level. Their desire for the same is only fulfilled when such entity gets Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) number. This code number is a key business identification number of the business. In this blog we will talks about the documents for the IEC (Importer-Exporter Code) registration, process and benefit of such registration.

Importer- Exporter Code

An Importer -Exporter Code (IEC) is a core business identification number and is mandatory for export from India or Import to India. It is a unique 10-digit numeric code. DGFT issues it on the basis of PAN card of a business. An individual or a business who desires to do international business has to get an IEC. However, the individuals can use either the name of their company or their name directly to apply for IEC. The IEC is not necessary in case where the service provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.

  • No Filing of returns
  • Easy to obtain IEC number from DGFT and after getting the code no other evidence of import export is needed.
  • No need for renewal because IEC code is effective for the lifetime of an entity

Requirement of the Importer-Exporter Code

The requirement of the Importer-Exporter Code is in following situation:

  • The customs authorities need it when an importer has to clear his shipments from the custom.
  • The customs port need it when an exporter has to send his shipments
  • Banks need it when an importer sends money abroad through bank
  • Banks need it when an exporter receives money in foreign currency directly into his bank account

Documents for the IEC (Import Export Code) Registration

Following are the necessary documents for IEC (Import Export Code) Registration:

 For Proprietorship firm

Following are the necessary document for Proprietorship firms:

  • Copy of Passport or Voter’s I-Card or Driving Licence or Aadhar card
  • Photo of the Proprietor
  • Copy of PAN card
  • Sale deed if the business premise is self-owned or Rental/Lease Agreement if office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity /telephone bill
  • Firm’s cancel cheque copies of current bank accounts

For Partnership firm

Following are the necessary document for Partnership firms:

  • Photo of the Managing Partner
  • Copy of PAN card of the entity
  • Copy of Passport or Voter’s I-Card or Aadhar Card or Driving Licence or PAN of the managing partner  
  • Partnership Deed copy.
  • Sale deed if the business premise is self-owned or Rental/Lease Agreement if office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity /telephone bill
  • Firm’s cancel cheque copies of current bank accounts

For Company or LLP

Following are the necessary document for Company or LLP:

  • Photo of the Designated Partner or Director of the Company signing the application
  • Copy of PAN card of the applicant company
  • Copy of Passport or Voter’s I-Card or Aadhar Card or Driving Licence or PAN of the Managing Partner/Director signing the application
  • Certificate of incorporation as issued by the RoC
  • Sale deed if the business premise is self-owned or Rental/Lease Agreement if office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity /telephone bill
  • Companies cancelled cheque copies of current bank accounts

For Registered Society / Trust

Following are the necessary document for registered Society/ Trust:

  • Digital Photograph (3x3cms) of the signatory applicant/Secretary or Chief Executive.
  • Copy of PAN card of the applicant entity
  • Copy of Passport or Voter’s I-Card or Aadhar Card or Driving Licence or PAN of the Secretary or Chief Executive/ Managing Trustee signing the application
  • Sale deed if the business premise is self-owned or Rental/Lease Agreement if office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity /telephone bill
  • Cancelled cheque copies of current bank accounts

For HUF Firm

Following are the necessary document for HUF firms:

  • Registration Certificate of the Society / Copy of the Trust Deed
  • Photo of the Karta
  • Copy of PAN card of the Karta
  • Copy of Passport or Voter’s I-Card or Aadhar card or Driving Licence of the Karta.
  • Sale deed if the business premise is self-owned or Rental/Lease Agreement if office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity /telephone bill
  • Cancelled Cheque bearing pre-printed name of applicant and A/C No.

Process for registration of IEC (Importer-Exporter Code)

Following are the process for registration of Importer- Exporter Code:

  • Go to the DGFT website
  • On the homepage click on the ‘Services’ tab
  • From the drop-down list Choose the ‘IEC Profile Management’ option
  • A new page will open. Click on the ‘Apply for IEC’ option
  • Select the ‘Register’ option and fill the necessary details and click ‘Sent OTP’ button
  • Insert the OTP and click the ‘Register’ button
  • After verification of OTP, one will get a notification comprising the temporary password which can be changed after logging into the DGFT website.
  • After registering on the DGFT website, login by entering the user name and password.
  • Then on DGFT website click ‘Apply for IEC’ option
  • After that fill the application form (ANF 2A format), upload the necessary documents, pay the fees and click on the ‘Submit and Generate IEC Certificate’ button
  • Then DGFT will issue the IEC code. One can take a printout of such IEC code

Conclusion

Hence, the Importer-Exporter Code is not necessary in case where the service provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy. All the requirements regarding the registration of IEC is clear from the above discussion so, get registration for the code if you want to see your product in global market.
